France Launches Major Security Operation for High-Risk France-Israel Match After Amsterdam Violence

France Launches Major Security Operation: France is deploying thousands of police officers and security personnel for Thursday’s UEFA Nations League match between France and Israel at the Stade de France, aiming to prevent any violence amid heightened tensions. The Paris police have labeled the event a “high-risk match,” following recent clashes in Amsterdam involving fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv, where Israeli supporters faced attacks.

Massive Security Effort in Paris

Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez confirmed that 4,000 police officers will be on duty, with 2,500 stationed at the Stade de France and others throughout public transport networks and key locations across Paris. Additionally, around 1,600 private security guards are positioned within the stadium. A specialized anti-terrorism police unit will ensure the safety of the visiting Israeli team, as heightened precautions are in place due to “an extremely tense geopolitical context,” Nuñez stated.

Limited Israeli Attendance and Pre-Game Tensions

The stadium, which accommodates up to 80,000 fans, will operate at only a quarter capacity. Following guidance from Israeli authorities, it’s anticipated that only about 100 Israeli fans will attend, though other supporters may also travel for the game. In response to security concerns, fans have been advised to expect thorough identity checks, while bars and restaurants around the stadium have been ordered to close early in the afternoon.

Concerns rose after incidents following last week’s Ajax-Maccabi Tel Aviv match in the Netherlands, where Maccabi fans clashed with Amsterdam locals. According to Dutch authorities, Maccabi supporters had damaged property and clashed with local groups, reportedly tearing down a Palestinian flag, attacking a taxi, and chanting anti-Arab slogans. In response, Amsterdam officials reported that groups of rioters later retaliated, pursuing Maccabi fans on foot, by scooter, and in cars.

Macron and Political Figures to Attend Amid Calls for Cancellation

In a demonstration of solidarity with European Jews, President Emmanuel Macron, joined by Prime Minister Michel Barnier and former presidents François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy, will attend Thursday’s match. This decision comes amidst backlash from France’s left-wing party France Unbowed (LFI), which has called for the match’s cancellation and urged Macron to abstain from attending. LFI member David Guiraud condemned Macron’s decision, accusing Israel of genocide, an allegation Israel has firmly denied.

Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau stated that canceling or relocating the match was “out of the question,” adding that France “does not yield to those who sow hatred.”

High Political Tensions Amid Escalating Protests

The match follows recent demonstrations in Paris, where pro-Palestinian activists protested outside a pro-Israel event attended remotely by far-right Israeli Minister Bezalel Smotrich. Demonstrations led to clashes, with police deploying tear gas to disperse crowds that had targeted businesses, including a McDonald’s on Boulevard Montmartre.

Relations between France and Israel have faced growing strain, especially after Macron’s recent criticism of Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu’s actions in Gaza and Lebanon. Macron reportedly urged Netanyahu to comply with United Nations calls for a ceasefire, referencing Israel’s own establishment by UN mandate, a remark perceived by some in Israel as dismissive.

With both political leaders treading a fine line in Middle East diplomacy, Macron’s presence at the match underscores France’s commitment to balancing public safety and solidarity amid escalating European tensions.
