More information about Barbie
Greta Gerwig, the director of Barbie, made history by being the first female filmmaker to work alone on a movie that grossed a staggering $1 billion worldwide. Barbie has an ensemble cast that includes stars like America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Dua Lipa, Emerald Fennell, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, and Will Ferrell in addition to Ryan Gosling as Ken and Margot Robbie as Barbie. The concept of the film is, “After being expelled from the utopian Barbie Land for being less-than-perfect dolls, Barbie and Ken go on a journey of self-discovery to the real world.”
“The pink is an odd cover for a deft satire. Greta not only criticizes Mattel, a co-producer and facilitator of this adaption, for some of its shady financial practices, but also Warner Bros in one scene for how it handled the Zack Snyder edit of Justice League. The sarcasm does, however, seem defeatist at one point. Following their taunting of the Kens to mansplain them, the Barbies then provoke them into fighting, which ultimately confirms the stereotype that women are to blame for men’s conflicts with one another.
Star Margot Robbie said in an interview with Fandango that a movie like Barbie would never be possible to produce. When she read the screenplay, she said, “I thought, ‘This is great and they’re never going to let us do it. What a pity that it will be completely wasted. Just because Greta pushes the plot in a route I didn’t believe they would allow us to go in, in addition to the fact that the movie is surprising. That included addressing both the positive and negative aspects of Barbie that many felt to be troublesome.
