Everyone is a Hero, a Malayalam film, is India’s official entry for the Oscars next year. Climate change and natural disasters are the subjects of the film.
The Film Federation of India announced on Wednesday that India’s official entry to the Academy Awards 2024 will be the multi-starrer survival drama 2018-Everyone is a Hero.
Girish Kasaravalli, noted film maker and chairman of the selection committee, announced at a press conference that the Malayalam film was chosen for its very relevant theme on climate change and the travails of people in relation to what has been understood as development in society.
FFI President Ravi Kottarakara stated that films were screened by a 16-member selection committee led by Kasaravalli.
Before selecting the Malayalam film, Jude Anthany Joseph considered 22 films, including The Kerala Story (Hindi), Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway (Hindi), Balagam (Telugu), Vaalvi (Marathi), Baaplyok (Marathi), and August 16, 1947 (Tamil).
The film, starring Tovino Thomas and Kunchako Boban, is based on the 2018 floods that devastated Kerala. Tanvi Ram and Aparna Balamurali are among the cast members.
