India Extends Support to Maldives Amid Growing China Ties: Approves Export of Essential Food Items
India Extends Support to Maldives Amid Growing China Ties: In a significant diplomatic move, India has approved the limited export of essential food items to the Maldives, demonstrating goodwill amid rising tensions between the two countries. The decision comes after the Maldives’ new government, led by President Mohamed Muizzu, has shown increasing alignment with China, which had strained relations with India.
India’s Goodwill Gesture to Maldives
Despite the ongoing export restrictions on various food items to control domestic inflation, India has made an exception for its neighboring nation. The export of vital food supplies, including sugar, wheat, rice, onions, potatoes, and eggs, will now be allowed to meet the Maldives’ urgent needs. This gesture is seen as an effort to restore ties with the island nation, which has had close diplomatic relations with India for years.
Details of the Export Approval
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued a notification granting permission to export over 1.24 lakh tons of rice, 1.09 lakh tons of wheat flour, 64,494 tons of sugar, and 35,749 tons of onions, along with 42.75 crore eggs. Additionally, the Maldives will also receive construction materials, including 10 lakh tons of river sand and stone for use in infrastructure projects.
Boosting Diplomatic Relations with Maldives
The recent decision follows months of strained ties between India and the Maldives, especially after President Muizzu’s administration took office in October 2023. The new government’s tilt towards China had raised concerns in India. However, this export approval marks a strategic step by India to rebuild and strengthen its relationship with the island nation, despite the changing geopolitical landscape.
No Future Restrictions on Food Exports
The notification specifies that the Maldives will be exempt from any current or future bans on food exports during the 2024-25 period. This highlights India’s commitment to maintaining bilateral ties and supporting the Maldives during challenging times.
India’s decision underscores the importance of maintaining strong relationships with its neighboring countries and providing assistance during critical times, even amidst broader geopolitical shifts.
