Trudeau Ally Jagmeet Singh Accept Donation from Khalistani: New revelations have surfaced regarding alleged links between Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) and a key ally of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a known Khalistani extremist. According to records from Elections Canada, Singh received a donation from Nijjar in 2017, fueling concerns about Singh’s stance amid ongoing tensions between India and Canada.
Elections Canada data shows that Hardeep Singh Nijjar, associated with postal code V3W 0J4, made a donation to the NDP and Singh in 2017. This postal code is reportedly linked to Nijjar’s business, Nijjar Plumbing & Heating Ltd., which employs his son, Mehtab Nijjar, as indicated by LinkedIn records.
The revelation is particularly sensitive given the diplomatic row that erupted between India and Canada following the assassination of Nijjar in June 2023. Nijjar, a 45-year-old Canadian citizen, was shot dead outside the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia. In September 2023, Canadian PM Trudeau publicly suggested that Indian agents might have been involved in Nijjar’s death, claims which India swiftly dismissed as “absurd.” The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are currently investigating the case.
In response to Trudeau’s allegations, India expelled six Canadian diplomats and withdrew its high commissioner and other targeted officials from Canada, underscoring India’s firm rejection of Ottawa’s charges. India has pointed to the underlying issue of pro-Khalistan elements operating freely within Canada, accusing Canadian authorities of providing these groups with unchecked space and influence.
As Canada-India relations remain strained, the discovery of Nijjar’s donation to Jagmeet Singh could heighten concerns regarding Singh’s alignment with Khalistani sympathizers.
