Double Tornadoes Strike Jay County Community Recovers from Unexpected Storms
This tornado began near the intersection of West 75 South and Joan Drive, rapidly intensifying as it tracked southeast. Its path included the Jay County Jr./Sr. High School, where considerable damage occurred, including a portion of the roof being ripped off and significant tree damage in the parking lot. Nearby homes also experienced roof damage, with trees uprooted throughout the west side of Portland.
The American Legion Post of Portland was not spared, sustaining heavy roof and second-story damage before the tornado lifted. Despite the destruction, the Jay County Emergency Management Agency reported no injuries, a relief amid the chaos.
Before the EF-1 tornado, an unnamed tornado briefly touched down about two miles north-northeast of Blaine, Indiana, lasting just two minutes from 7:42 PM to 7:44 PM. Rated EF-Unknown due to its minimal impact—limited to crop damage in a cornfield—this twister caught residents off guard, as no Tornado Warning had been issued. The unpredictable atmospheric conditions on that cloudy, rainy day created just enough instability to generate the tornadoes.
Samantha Rhodehamel, Director of Emergency Management in Jay County, praised the swift response from first responders, who ensured everyone was accounted for by 11 PM Sunday. The county is now coordinating with state officials and exploring the possibility of federal assistance.
Reflecting on the community’s resilience, Rhodehamel noted, “A lot of people initially were in shock… but we’re thankful that no one was injured. Everyone seems to be very appreciative of all the help they are getting.”
In light of the damage to the high school, students in kindergarten through sixth grade will return to in-person classes, while grades seven through twelve will transition to eLearning as repair efforts continue.
As the community begins its recovery, residents are encouraged to report any damage and stay safe. For ongoing updates and forecasts, visit the WANE 15 Forecast Page. Jay County stands united, grateful for the support and determination to rebuild after these unexpected storms.
