Details of the Incident
Sgt. Steve Wills of the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office reported that the overwhelming number of teens outmatched the available law enforcement presence. Initially, eight off-duty officers were assigned to the event, but as the situation escalated, six additional deputies were called in to help restore order. Wills noted that the teens not only fought amongst themselves but also caused disturbances in nearby restaurants, with some even flipping over tables.
“We were focused on de-escalation, and our goal was to contain the environment,” Wills explained. Despite the chaos, no arrests were made, which was a relief given the intensity of the situation.
Miscommunication and Safety Concerns
Amid the turmoil, there were alarming reports from the community about “multiple stabbings” and a gun being brandished in the arcade area. However, Wills clarified that no one was stabbed and that while there were reports of firearm possessions, deputies did not encounter any weapons. “A lot of the stuff circulating out there in the community right now is false. There were no firearms that we dealt with and no knives or stabbings,” he emphasized.
Geoff Zindren, Communications Director for Kings Dominion, also addressed the incident, noting that rides and outdoor attractions had been temporarily shut down due to storms in the area. “A minor physical altercation occurred among some juveniles seeking refuge, but it was quickly halted by the security team, and those involved were banned from the park,” Zindren stated.
A Call for Parental Responsibility
In light of the events, Wills urged parents to take a more active role in supervising their children when attending such large gatherings. “Don’t just drop your kids off and leave them at Kings Dominion like it’s a daycare,” he advised. “Be present with them and get a handle on that behavior before it becomes a problem that we have to address.”
