Vladimir Shklyarov: The ballet community worldwide is mourning the sudden and tragic death of Vladimir Shklyarov, a celebrated principal dancer with Russia’s prestigious Mariinsky Theatre. The 39-year-old’s passing was confirmed by the St Petersburg-based company on Saturday, leaving fans and colleagues in shock.
A Shining Star in Ballet
Born in Leningrad, Shklyarov was a product of the legendary Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, where he graduated in 2003. He joined the Mariinsky Theatre the same year and rose to become a principal dancer in 2011. Known for his grace and artistry, Shklyarov performed lead roles in timeless classics like Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, and Don Quixote.
His exceptional talent brought him to the stages of the world’s most prestigious venues, including London’s Royal Opera House and New York’s Metropolitan Opera.

Russian media reports indicate Shklyarov fell from the fifth floor of a St Petersburg building while on painkillers. Federal authorities are currently investigating the circumstances of his death.

A Legacy of Excellence
Throughout his two-decade-long career, Shklyarov’s performances captivated audiences globally. In 2014 and 2015, he performed as a guest artist with the American Ballet Theatre (ABT). On Sunday, ABT expressed their grief, calling him “an extraordinary artist whose grace and passion inspired audiences worldwide.”
Shklyarov’s accolades included the Léonide Massine International Prize (2008) and the Honoured Artist of Russia title (2020).
