Ice Spice has broken her silence on The 1975 frontman Matty Healy’s racist and derogatory remarks made earlier this year in February. In a new interview with Variety, the Deli singer addressed the controversy, saying she was’so confused’ at first and that Matty Healy had apologized ‘a bunch of times’.
Concerning the controversy
It all started in February, when Matty Healy mocked Ice Spice on The Adam Friedland Show, using derogatory terms about her body and ethnicity, and impersonating her with Chinese and Hawaiian accents.
Ice Spice stated
Ice Spice revealed her thoughts on the Matty Healy controversy in a new interview with Variety. “When I heard that little podcast or whatever, I was so confused,” she explained. Because I heard ‘chubby Chinese lady’ or something along those lines and thought, ‘Huh? ‘What exactly does that mean?’ First and foremost, I’m dense. What exactly do you mean, Chinese? What? But then they apologized or something. And I didn’t care the whole time.”
Ice Spice also revealed that she had a run-in with Matty Healy a few weeks ago at SSENSE’s Jean Paul Gaultier event during New York Fashion Week. “But it’s funny because I saw him at the Jean Paul Gaultier party a couple of days ago, and he was like, ‘Hey, you okay?’ and I was like, ‘Of course.'” He apologized numerous times to me. We’re fine.
Ice Spice was recently spotted at the VMAs, sitting next to Taylor Swift. They had both worked on the remixed version of Karma from Midnights. According to reports, Taylor was romantically involved with Matty Healy at the time. The two have been friends since 2014 and have previously sparked dating rumors. After a few months, new reports surfaced in June claiming that Taylor and Matty had called it quits. Swifties, who were initially disappointed by the linkup rumors, were overjoyed by the breakup reports.
