Washington Sundar travels to Colombo as Team India makes a last-minute addition to its Asia Cup team

Much before the formal announcement, Wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik surprised fans with a cryptic tweet hinting the same.

Washington Sundar arrived in Colombo as a last-minute replacement for the Indian side in Sri Lanka ahead of the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka on Sunday. The all-rounder replaces Axar Patel, who was struck many times on the wrist and forearm region while batting in India’s six-run loss to Bangladesh on Friday.

The extent of Axar’s injuries is unknown, thus Sundar has been summoned as a precaution. Meanwhile, aside from the swelling in his forearm, Axar’s hamstring has disturbed the management with the ODI World Cup rapidly approaching, according to a PTI report.

“Axar is now wounded on numerous fronts. He injured his little finger, was whacked on the forearm by a deep throw, and most critically, he suffered a hamstring niggle. So Washington has been summoned,” a BCCI source said on condition of anonymity to PTI.

Much before the news leaked, Wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik intrigued fans with a cryptic tweet hinting the same.

“At the airport, I ran into Washington Sundar.”

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill previously told reporters that there was no need for alarm with Axar, calling the discomfort “temporary.”

When questioned about the all-rounder’s condition after the Bangladesh match, Gill replied during the post-match news conference, “I don’t think there is anything wrong with Axar.” “I believe it was a one-time occurrence and there was nothing to worry about.”

Axar Patel’s bowling problem

While looking at Axar’s present form, it’s difficult to say if his injury is a blessing in disguise for the Indian squad. The all-rounder has been a fine batsman, but it is his bowling that has prompted concerns about his selection.

For the first time in the competition, Axar was given a chance against Sri Lanka in the Super 4 stage. Axar then contributed a vital 36-ball 26 to help India reach 213/10 in 49.1 overs. He subsequently went on to score a brilliant 34-ball 42 against Bangladesh, although in a losing cause.

However, based on his bowling statistics, Axar has been far from clinical. On a pitch dominated by spinners, he was observed laboring in the match against Sri Lanka. Despite India going for a three-headed spin assault, he was only given five overs and failed to account for a single scalp while allowing 29 runs.

In the last encounter against Bangladesh, Axar bowled nine overs and claimed one wicket.
Sundar, meanwhile, is anticipated to join the rest of the squad later in the day. He is also a member of the Asian Games team, which will compete in Hangzhou, China, in the continental tournament.

Sundar will most likely go to Bengaluru following the Asian Games final on Sunday, where he and the other Asian Games athletes will meet for a two-week training camp.

Sundar was last seen in action against Ireland in a T20I series last month, and it would be intriguing to watch whether he breaks right into the XI.

Sundar’s off-breaks may be useful, particularly against Sri Lankan left-handers at the top, and he has much of experience bowling in powerplay overs.
